@bleke could you compile all what you have learn about clipping and masking in a dedicated tutorial post? That way people have a place to reference from. You can also link that thread to this one so users can find it if they have the same question.
I suppose so. I don’t think I’m quite the right person to do so, given my limited understanding of the subject.
But I could provide a first draft, then other people could correct and add to it.

Am I correct in assuming that MyPaint places all layers and groups in a group that is invisible to the user?
So what’s there when you start up MyPaint is this:
[invisible group]
|-layer
|-background
And if you add a group with some layers in it it would be like this:
[invisible group]
|-[group]
| |-layer
| |-layer
| |-layer
|-layer
|-background
Yeah if that group’s visibility is off, all layers and groups within are also hidden.
