R api to libmypaint

I thought mypaint users might be interested in GitHub - hughjonesd/mypaintr: Plot R graphics like a human · GitHub, an R api to libmypaint. If you’re into generative art, or just creating cool graphs, then you can use R with mypaint brushes. There’s an intro at mypaintr • mypaintr

I’m not a graphics or mypaint expert, so feedback is very welcome! If you create something cool with mypaintr, post a link here or at bluesky (@hughjonesd.bsky.social).

i doubt that anyone could be interesed into generative AI art because of that, i mean we are talking about AI?

You don’t need to use AI to use mypaintr or make generative art with it.

Interesting use of libmypaint, but what is the purpose of the R language?

It’s for statistics, but also used by some people to make generative art. It has a well-known plotting library, ggplot.

This is a really interesting idea. I haven’t seen many tools that combine R’s data visualization capabilities with the expressive brush system from MyPaint.

The examples on the intro page have a nice hand-drawn feel that’s hard to get with traditional plotting libraries. I can imagine this being useful not only for generative art but also for creating charts that feel more personal and less “machine-generated.”

I dont consider Ai generative images Art at all

“Generative art” usually has nothing to do with generative AI and has existed well before that came into fashion, it’s just unfortunate that they have a similar name. In this case, it’s using a programming language meant for statistics plugged into MyPaint to create pictures with it.

David has done a lot of great work creating a new interface for artists and designers to use brushlib in a niche and really interesting way. R implements many amazing libraries and functions therein that generative artists can exploit in fascinating ways to lay down strokes and colours; no doubt having access to a major brush engine like brushlib will enrich what generative artists can create.

Going forward, I would appreciate if replies in this topic avoid conflating generative art with generative AI.

Thanks for the kind words Aesara!
