Making curves with Lines and curves tool doesn't seem to work

I only just today realized you can create curves with this tool (even though it’s in the name, I know, call me stupid), but I can’t seem to figure out how it works. It says to just hold Shift, but that just constrains the angle like holding Ctrl does. Is there any way to fix this, or am I just missing something else?

Mypaint version: 2.0.1+git.478280f2, 64 bit version

Windows 10, 64 bit

Wacom One tablet

No error messages, as far as I can tell

You draw out a straight line, then drag from a certain point as you hold down shift you. You can let go of shift before holding it and dragging again from a different point to change the shape of the curve still more.
