Learning to cheap oil paint # 009

learning to details, or lighting

Very nice Charles! I hope you won’t mind a few observations and suggestions.

dang, or that’s pro advice

one of the things trying to do is work artistically, or not think too much perspective, or techniques that do most of the work, or that sort of want to chill, or atm also to therapy, or that live in psychiatry, or deal with PTSD atm

there was a ton of details wrong, or also forgot the background, or that never really thought of where the light, or reference was in 3D, or however trying to learn from each painting, or that also enjoy museum, or not sure faded, or serenity colors, or however trying to learn, or working to create therapy, or that live in psychiatry

Yeah, the thing about art is that it is very personal what you like and what you are trying to achieve. So when someone has opinions about it, only listen to the advice you agree with and disregard the rest.

that’s cool, or listening

atm what want, is to learn to pick colors, or only work from the palette, or that gives a cheap oil painting look, or however mixing, or correcting hues is tough, or what not sure of, or to learn atm

keep getting colors wrong, or this is also one setting, or then done, or want to paint for 1 - 1 ½ hour, or then walk away, or that’s atm what working towards, or also have PTSD, or several years of trauma, or dealing with depression

that’s why taking it slow, or to have fun, or just make art, or not think, or care to be professional, or so it feels like therapy, or however read all your advice, or thinking what could learn, or add to how paint

note, or posting here, or on a local server for artist, or where there are 20 - 25 atm, or wanted to post here, or to say #thx for the program, or also to see what people are using, or that of therapy, or to make tutorials, or teach on youtube

have delt with multiple PTSD for a decade, or doing this to have fun, or not think for an hour, or wanted to say the program is cool, or simple, or clean, or that it all adds up to that it’s beginner friendly, or however also to good results

Yes, it is. In my opinion, one should master values first. Once you understand values you can add in any hue you like and the painting will still be readable:

Values are what makes objects appear three dimensional. See how you have random dark values on the forehead for example? They make the surface look uneven, when in the original image it looks very smooth.

You seem to be struggling with the nose, that is also very much because of values. Find where the light and the shaded areas are, then the nose will look more three dimensional.

One of the difficult things about hues is that not all hues have the same value, as demonstrated in this video by Marco Bucci: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ2HOj22gDo

And good luck with the PTSD. I went to a boarding school where I was taught that I am a disgusting individual. Not by the teachers, but by the other people who lived there. It took about ten years to find motivation to move on with life, and I still have trust issues if someone approaches me. Maybe not the same as your experience, but I think I understand approximately how you feel.

for me it was an illegal war, or serving the wrong countries, or have spent ten years in Perdition, or however hope you’re moving on, or that to let the past die, or when it’s that serious, or to focus on life, or what you want
